Basement Tapes volume 2

Now that you’ve had a chance to see the kind of musical mp3 fare I’m dishing up around here (which is to say you’ve already listened to at least some of the stuff on Volume 1 of the Basement Tapes series—highly recommended!) I feel I can let you in on some even more raw, cutting edge shit.  This volume of the series has more improvisational, jammed kind of material and some previews of works still in progress.  Here you may find alot of stuff you’ve never heard before because (like, say, The Zoo of the Future from Volume 1) it isn’t the kind of stuff we typically do live.  However, much of it is highly amusing and some of it is downright magical.  So enjoy Volume 2 and remember our mantra: LONG LIVE THE AUDIO CASSETTE!!

Harmonic Funk

[recorded 4-24-05]

As Carl has occasionally but steadily mentioned in the four months since we made this groove up in late April 2005, this really is one we should develop further and perform live.  What you’re hearing here is the first and only night we jammed on this as a group.  I think Carl invented the original riff and the vocal melody line, but as you’ll hear, we all add our unique contributions to make this a rather inspiring and lively track.  Offering it here as an mp3 serves my ongoing effort to bring some of our great “lost jams” out into the public ear and see where that takes things.

Falling Wall

Falling Wall with talk

[recorded 5-13-05]

Falling Wall is a song that gelled really quickly for Telepathic Dumpster—I think we nailed it the first or second time we ever played it.  To me it is a quintessential Telepathic Dumpster song, and I’ve given you two mp3 versions of it here: one (called Falling Wall) with just the song itself, and another (called Falling Wall with Talk) of the same take with some additional talking at the end that, in addition to being vaguely entertaining, gives you an idea of the kind of shit we say to each other after an energizing and successful run of a song like this one is.

Frig Digger Jam

[recorded 5-13-05]

This is an improvisational jam we played one night.  It is pretty rough around the edges—you’ll hear us talking, and a few starts and stops (it’s like we want to put an end to Frig Digger but it has a mind of its own)—but it gives you an idea of how we often invent stuff on the fly and recycle it later: the end of this jam includes embryonic versions of Satan’s Baby and Whale Sex.  And it’s hard not to like a song called Frig Digger.

Josh's Jam

[recorded 8-7-05]

Originally brought in as the second half of Shit On My Door, this awesome rock groove is now being used as the basis for a forthcoming composition by the Master of Rock.  I offer it here as a treat for the listener and a reminder to the band to get this up and running ASAP.

Whale Sex
Satan's Baby - Whale Sex

[recorded 8-7-05]

If you’re like me, you remember Whale Sex as one of the great rock ballads of summer '05.  Here is a particularly good version of it, and for those of you who enjoyed the Satan’s Baby – Whale Sex duology we played at the first house party and the first Black Forest show, I have also included a version of that whole duology consisting of this same take of Whale Sex and the version of Satan’s Baby from volume 1 of the bootleg tapes.  The two songs were played consecutively at the same band practice but in reverse order when originally recorded (more digital editing magic!).

Pretty Old Train

[recorded 8-12-05]

No collection of summer hits would be complete without a recording of Pretty Old Train.  Originally composed by Josh in his pre-Dumpster years, it has proven to be a band and audience favorite at our recent shows and stands as one of my all-time favorite Telepathic Dumpster songs.

Shit On My Door

[recorded 8-12-05]

If we were to hold a contest for best Telepathic Dumpster song title, Shit On My Door would almost certainly win.  Based on a real-life incident, Shit On My Door is a rock classic that is only available here in the bootleg tapes series—for now.

Endless

[recorded 9-6-05]

This is one of those cutting-edge previews I was telling you about: this song has yet to be performed live (as of this posting) and though it may appear on a future Telepathic Dumpster CD, right now, this is the only place to hear it.  Rock and roll, motherfucker!  [Editor's note: this blurb was written last fall, before we had played Endless live.  We have since.]

Being Groovy Jam
[recorded 10-9-04]

This track was recorded at a Carl-Emily-Carter jam session in October of 2004, which I believe means it predates the first time we played as a four-piece with Josh.  This would technically make this a Three-Headed Dumpster jam, but I’d like to see this track develop into something more with Telepathic Dumpster’s complete musical arsenal rocking it.

The Roots

[recorded 1-22-05]

This recording comes from the earliest Telepathic Dumpster rehearsal tape in my possession.  Recorded back in January of 2005, this track constitutes the first recorded instance of the Master of Rock section acting as the second half of The Roots.  The latter song originally appeared sans Master of Rock on Carl’s excellent solo album Return Trip.
